In creating the model for what would become Southern Community, Scott Bauer drew from extensive
experience. A native of Winston-Salem, Bauer graduated from the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill with a B.S. degree in Business Administration and later received a Master's degree in
banking from the prestigious Stonier Graduate School of Banking at the University of Delaware.
He spent the first five years of his banking career at Wachovia Bank before joining Northwestern Bank
as a commercial banker. After Northwestern was acquired by First Union, he continued to sell corporate
services to middle-market companies. In 1989, Bauer moved to Southern National Bank and later
became the bank's city executive in Winston-Salem. Shortly after Southern National Bank was
acquired by BB&T, Bauer resigned to devote his time to forming Southern Community
Mr. Chrysson is the co-owner and vice president of C.B. Development Company, a residential and multifamily development company. Mr. Chrysson is on the Board of Directors of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Winston-Salem. He is currently on the Board of the Ricky Proehl NFL Charity Golf Classic for Amos Cottage and serves on the Board of Amos Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital of the Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
Mr. Gallins is president of Gallins Foods, Inc. He has served as past president of the North Carolina Vending Association and serves on the Board of Old Salem Trustees. Mr. Gallins also serves on the Board of Directors of the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce. He was named North Carolina Vendor of the Year 2000 by the North Carolina Vending Association.
Mr. Brown is a native of Surry County. His businesses include farming and real estate. He is a member of the Shoals Ruritan Club, a member of the Old Belt Board and chairman of the Shoals Recreation Community Center.
Mr. Frye is the former Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Community Bank. He is a graduate of Clemson University, with graduate degrees from Clemson University and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Bankers Bank in Atlanta, is a trustee for the College Foundation, Inc. and has served on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Bankers Association. Mr. Frye currently serves by appointment of the Governor as a member of the State Banking Commission.
Ms. Lane retired in August 2004. She is the former senior vice president and treasurer of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings, Inc. (now Reynolds American, Inc.), Winston-Salem, N.C. She also serves on the Board of Trustees for Greensboro College and the Board of Directors of the East Carolina University Foundation.
Mr. Merritt is a self-employed attorney at law with a practice based in Mount Airy. He serves on the Board of Trustees for Northern Hospital of Surry County and serves on the Board of Directors of Renfro Corporation.
Dr. Ward is an orthopedic surgeon at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital and professor of orthopedics at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He coaches in the Optimist Soccer League. In 1983, Dr. Ward was a founding director of Lincolnton Bank in Lincolnton, North Carolina
Mr. Smoak retired in July, 2004 as president of the Pleasants Group, the nation's largest distributor of architectural doors and related hardware. He is a Certified Public Accountant and formerly served as Chief Financial Officer of both private and publicly held corporations. He is presently an officer and director of the North Carolina School of the Arts Foundation, Inc.
Beverly Hubbard Godfrey is the newest member of the board of directors. President and CEO of Coldwell Banker Triad Realtors, one of the Triad's largest real estate firms, she is a 28 year veteran of the real estate industry. Soon after graduating from Salem College with a degree in psychology she joined Hubbard Realty, which her father founded in 1950. She now presides over a company with some 350 sales agents in seven locations.
Mr. Robertson is President and CEO of Robertson Airtech International, headquartered in Charlotte, NC, providing engineering, design, fabrication, installation and service of refrigeration, air conditioning, air filtration, and compressed air control systems across a broad spectrum of applications. He has served in this capacity since 1991. Prior to his involvement with Robertson Airtech International, Mr. Robertson spent eighteen years in the telecommunications and radio and television broadcast industries, with New Market Media Corporation and Summit Communications. He serves on various corporate and non-profit organizations' boards including Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Board of Directors, North Carolina Baptist Hospital Board of Trustees, Lead International Board of Directors, Davie County Emergency Health Corporation Board of Trustees, Davie County Economic Development Commission Board Member and several other non-profit boards located in the Triad, North Carolina area.
